![]() ![]() Hyper Light Drifter‘s exploration elements are probably its strongest suits. Might as well just go for it! If you think you’ll enjoy this game, you probably will. But if you were on the fence already, this is your last chance to go in as spoiler-free as you can. It’s a good game, I like it a lot! I’ll be going into more detail from here on out, as I do. I don’t fully understand the significance of this and *neither will you*.īut my overall impression of Hyper Light Drifter is positive. And if you’re one of those players who’d prefer to get the ‘full’ story without having to consult wikis or dive into comprehensive fan theories, you might want to start preparing for disappointment. The combat particularly suffers from occasionally-wonky controls and a high difficulty level, exacerbated in places by the placement of puzzles and traps and healing items, and can act as a hard-to-surmount skill gate for players lacking reaction speed or the muscle memory of decades - just like Dark Souls, in fact! There is some overreliance on the ‘rub yourself against everything ever to see if it’s a secret’ school of exploration. In all cases, the game’s gorgeous audiovisual presentation is the bait. The former is the hook for players looking for adrenaline fun and high-octane engagement: zipping around and slashing and shooting and throwing grenades, yeah! The latter is the hook for players aching for that rare subdued, actually mysterious exploration, one where direct ‘answers’ are rarely given - though they are given - and you have to piece together your own interpretation of the puzzle from hints and happenstance. Like Dark Souls, Hyper Light Drifter is a game that’s in equal parts about fast, lethal, skillful combat, and about the exploration of an enigmatic crumbling world. Those whispered Dark Souls comparisons I opened with? Those are actually not far off the mark. But Hyper Light Drifter actually delivers on the implicit promises of its strong opening. I had fun with Hyper Light Drifter! I usually don’t get all prosaic on the first page unless a game grabs me in some way, so that in and by itself is telling. HYPER LIGHT DRIFTER HIEROPHANT FULLAnd that netted me - not the full 100% completion, god no, that’d probably push the count into the double digits. I sank about half a dozen hours into it, I think. It took some effort, but I saw Hyper Light Drifter through to completion. This screenshot tells you nothing, unless it tells you everything. ![]()
